Effects of Dietary Selenium on Peroxidative Damage and Antioxidative System in Brain of Cadmium Administered Rats
Park Mi-Hyang

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the antioxidative detoxification effect of dietary selenium on the cellular peroxidative damage in brain of rats due to cadmium administration. Male rats of Sprague-Dawley weighing 60¡¾5 g were divided into two groups. One group was fed basal diet and the other group was fed basal diet added selenium 0.5§· per §¸ diet. After feeding the diet ad libitum for 2 or 4 weeks, cadmium was injected to the rats at the level of 2.5§· cadmium per §¸ body weight and four times injection with 24 hours if interval. Weight gain and food deficiency ratio of cadmium injected rats (CD and CDS)were lower than those of control rats. Activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD)in brain of cadmium injected rats were significantly increased, while that of dietary selenium added rats(CS and CDS) showed no significant difference comparing with control rats Activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in rats of CD group remarkably decreased, however, the enzyme activity of the rats of dietary selenium feeding. (CDS)groups did not show any significant difference with control. Activities of glutahione S-transferase(GST)of cadmium injected rats also decreased remarkably comparing with that of control. Activity of GST of CDS group rats showed no significant difference comparing with that of control but it was significantly increased comparing with that of CD group rats. Brain lipid peroxide value significantly increased in cadmium injected rats, while the value of dietary selenium feeding rats (CDS) remarkably decreased. Through these experiments feeding periods(2 or 4 weeks) did not show any significant effect on enzymic activities or peroxide values.
